From September 7 to 9, 2024, the World Taiwanese Hakka Federation Reunion Conference was held in Vancouver, Canada, hosted by the Vancouver Taiwanese Hakka Association. Over 300 representatives from North America, South America, Asia, and Taiwan attended, showcasing the unity and enthusiasm of the global Hakka community.
Upon arrival at Vancouver’s YVR International Airport, attendees were greeted warmly by the welcoming team and took group photos under Indigenous wooden sculptures, reflecting the Hakka spirit of friendship and hospitality.
The conference theme, “The Global Growth and Cultural Heritage of the Hakka,” focused on how Hakka culture adapts and thrives in diverse environments. Chairperson Hsiu-Fei Ku of the Hakka Affairs Council opened with the story of an elderly farmer, highlighting the Hakka spirit of selfless dedication, which remains vital today.
Throughout the event, speakers shared strategies to promote Hakka culture, including developing Hakka-language media content, hosting cooking competitions, boosting tourism in Hakka regions, and supporting youth initiatives. These efforts aim not only to preserve Hakka heritage but also to strengthen the cohesion of Hakka communities worldwide.
Veteran Hakka cultural advocate Mei-Chun Chiu shared her experiences in promoting Hakka music in Chicago, emphasizing the crucial role of art in cultural preservation. Dr. Yu-Ching Huang illustrated the regional variations of Hakka cuisine, highlighting the inclusivity and diversity of Hakka culture on a global scale.
During the Hakka Youth Special Presentation, several young speakers discussed their efforts in promoting Hakka culture and explored ways to engage more youth. They emphasized that cultural preservation alone is insufficient; practical business resources and opportunities are needed to inspire and involve the younger generation.
The conference was not only a cultural celebration but also a profound exchange of ideas and connections. Attendees learned from and encouraged one another, reflecting on ways to keep Hakka culture vibrant in today’s world. A half-day tour of Vancouver further enriched the experience, offering participants a glimpse of the city’s beauty and cultural charm, strengthening their bonds.
The most significant takeaway from the conference was meeting Hakka elders and peers from around the globe. This exchange reaffirmed our commitment to cultural preservation and inspired us to continue contributing to the development of Hakka culture. We look forward to future collaborations to ensure Hakka culture flourishes worldwide.
Special thanks to President Chen-Chien Chung, Secretary-General Chiung-Ju Tang, President Jui-Ying Lin of the Vancouver Hakka Association, and the hardworking Vancouver team for their dedication, making this conference a resounding success!
